An Open Letter: Hate or Love? The Church & Homosexual Marriage

To my brothers and sisters in Christ with whom we are on opposing sides,

As we discuss the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing homosexual marriage across the nation, let's keep in mind that our struggles are not with each other, "but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Eph. 6:12).

We are not perfect. Often, we are not tactful. And yes, like you, we are passionate. But this is not about "hate." Satan would love nothing more than for you to believe that, to divide us. Please hear me out.

We love God passionately because He has saved us from our sin and an eternity in Hell. He gives us strength, grace, and mercy to walk daily on this difficult and painful path on earth. Out of our gratitude for His love for us, we desire to obey Him in all things, which brings Him delight and pleasure. We seek to please and honor Him.

We believe His word, the Holy Bible, to be true.

It is the foundation of all we hold dear. Our hope rests on the truth of His word.

If we ignore parts of it that we don't like or make us uncomfortable, then none of it can be true.

For if we handpick parts to believe or trivialize what it says, we have shaped our own god, an idol of our choosing - and that is no god at hope.

So, we look at verses like 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and Romans 1:18-32 (below), very pointed verses about whom God will save and whom He won't. What do we do with those verses? We can't just line them out because man has decided to do something contrary to them.

In fact, God closes His words to us in Revelation 22:18-19 with a warning: "I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book."

God never changes. His word stands despite man's beliefs and actions. Adding to or taking from God's word brings His eternal wrath on us, on our fellow man.

If we want to obey Him, He demands that we obey ALL of what He has spoken, or there will be consequences.

We love God, and we, along with God, desire for all "to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:4) and share in the hope that He has given us! "Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God" (1 Cor 6:11).

We love our neighbor. We don't want God's eternal wrath poured out on any one.

This isn't about hate at all.

It's about real love.

Not the temporal, feel-good emotion that man calls "love."

But love as God defines it.

A love that is hard to speak. A love that is hard to hear.

A love that invites ridicule, hatred, slander, and scorn.

But a love that must be shared. Out of a love for God. Out of a love for others.

At the expense of love for self.

Scripture References:

1 Corinthians 6:9-10:
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

Romans 1:18-32:
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

Arise, Go to Work, and Shine

A friend shared this sermon with me today. I think it's a great complement to the last post, so I'm sharing! Please take the time and listen.

There are lots of minutes in the day to steal time for something important…while getting ready in the morning or at bedtime, while driving, while exercising. You won't regret it.

A Call to the Church

I haven't been on this blog for over a year. But since the SCOTUS ruling on Friday ordering all states to recognize homosexual marriage, my mind has been reeling with questions, thoughts, wonders. Too much to contain, so I must write to process. Even if no one reads, it's a journal of sorts, therapy for me.

Funny that the first thing I saw when I returned here was a draft post I had started 16 months ago. It was a call to the Church. I never published it. And now, it seems needed more than ever.

This post isn't for the world. It's not for those who do not know Jesus Christ because it will not make sense to you, for "a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised" (1 Corinthians 2:14).

So, before I get going with what brought me back here, I'll begin with a challenge to the Church and finally publish this post. Are you up for it?

February 2014

Jesus commanded His people to "occupy" until His return (Luke 19:13). I encourage you to study that word. Research it in the 1828 Dictionary, then do a concordance search of its key words "possess" and "possession" in Scripture.

You will find that it is very important to God that HIS people, not the pagans, possess the land.

Ponder that. Why would He create the nations only to have them ruled by the ungodly? How could that be His will or serve His purpose?

His desire is for all to know Him (1 Timothy 2:4). And through godly leadership and government, His name is made known and known to be great.

I've heard all sorts of excuses why believers stay out of government:
Politics is dirty.
God doesn't really care about nations, so neither should we.
We should spend our time evangelizing only. (Really? You're going to use that one? And just how many hours a day do you evangelize?)
But the biggest one by far is…I'm just too busy.

There is not one area of life that God does not touch and where His principles do not apply. He owns it all. It's all His.

God is the Creator of government. He assigned specific purposes to it: punish evil and condone good (Romans 13:3). He gave us instructions for choosing leaders. He gave them directions for how to lead.

The word "nation" appears 145 times in the King James Bible. "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord"(Psalm 33:12). He determined when we would dwell in the nation in which He planted us! (Acts 17:26) Does it sound like He doesn't care about nations?

If politics is dirty, it's because the "salt and light" abandoned it to the world. Like all of God's gifts to man, we were meant to be a good steward of our nation and its government.

What will you do to change our nation's course? What nation will you leave to your generations?

Bless God today and every day.

Europe Flees Economy-Destroying Green Initiatives While Obama Presses On

I greatly appreciate the work of the Cornwall Alliance and the Biblical perspective it brings to the heated and passionate topic of environmentalism.
"The Cornwall Alliance is a coalition of clergy, theologians, religious leaders, scientists, academics, and policy experts committed to bringing a balanced Biblical view of stewardship to the critical issues of environment and development. The Cornwall Alliance fully supports the principles espoused in the Cornwall Declaration on Environmental Stewardship, and is seeking to promote those principles in the discussion of various public policy issues including population and poverty, food, energy, water, endangered species, habitat, and other related topics."

This effective article from Cornwall Alliance outlines the results of going beyond environmental stewardship to radicalism.

The United States is fortunate because we have the luxury of seeing the actual effects of these policies (the tragic effects on the people, mostly, the poor) before we implement them since Europe went down this path long before we did - but only if we heed its warnings.

C02 reduction regulations and subsidies for “green energy” are destroying the European economy, and the United States is next.
But Europe’s waking up. After years of trying to lead the push to go green, it has turned around and begun steep cuts in its climate protection goals. Why? To save member states’ economies.
For example, Germany, one of the strongest proponents of environmental regulations in the European Union (EU), has seen energy prices soar, making its prices the highest in Europe. According to the Telegraph,, a three-person household will soon be paying ninety euros a month for electricity ($123.05) and 300,000 households per year are having their power turned off because they can’t pay the bill.

These high prices are in part due to the large subsidies (taxes) given for wind and solar energy. In addition, “green” energy producers are guaranteed a offline, and the rest are scheduled to be shut down by 2022.
Germany, like all who subscribe to the environmentalists’ viewpoint, has put being “green” over the good of its people. They have forgotten God’s created order, and the outcome has been more and more people, usually the poorest, hurt by bad policy. Environmentalists strongly support subsidies for “green” energy, but “Thou shalt not steal” is a commandment that should not be forgotten. Germany has been stealing from its people to fund its solar and wind habit, and, as with all addicts, a time comes when that habit either has to be kicked, or severe damage ensues.
Because of the disturbing economic situation and German industries’ fears that they will no longer be competitive, Germany’s Economy Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, wants to cut “green” subsidies by one-third by 2015. But is it too little too late?
The EU has reduced its climate protection goals so that though targets will be binding on the EU level, they will not be binding on member states. Goals include a target of 27% “green” energy production, but with no guidelines for how member states meet that target.
The European Commission, executive branch of the EU, has called for “an industrial renaissance” in Europe. Recognizing that “green” regulation’s damage to industry is part of the reason for Europe’s failing economy (unemployment in EU was 10.9% as of October), the Commission is attempting to encourage a more industry-friendly economic environment.
The Commission intends to make the regulatory environment more “stable and predictable” and make EU laws “easier and reduce bureaucratic burdens.”
Included in a more industry-friendly environment are laws allowing hydro-fracking for shale gas. The EU is setting basic principles for health and safety but will not be “meddling in the energy mix that is to be chosen by member states,”claims Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
This has lifted pressure on the UK to build wind and solar farms and left it free to pursue nuclear and shale gas energy options. Prime Minister David Cameron announced January 27 that his government was ripping up “80,000 pages of environmental protections and building guidelines.”
Meanwhile, President Obama continues pushing the United States toward the brink by forging ahead with plans to fight the global warming that hasn’t happened in at least the last 17 years, using measures that will cost $trillions by mid-century but will cause no significant reduction in global temperature by the end of the century.
One of President Obama’s means to force the environmentalist agenda on Americans is The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Its war on coal destroyed between 13,000 and 17,000 direct and indirect jobs in 2012 alone due to announced coal plant closures. Fast forward to 2014 and the EPA has announced a regulation that would effectively kill the coal industry. Any new coal power plant built, whether to replace or add to existing plants, must meet an emissions standard that is impossible with current technology.
Then of course there is the stonewalling of the Keystone XL Pipeline extension. This pipeline that President Obama claimed would only “create about 50 permanent jobs,” has been estimated by his own State Department to create 42,000 jobs.
At the state level there are also significant economic hardships from enactments of “green” policies. Colorado has seen a 20% faster increase in energy prices compared to the rest of the U.S. Why? Because Colorado followed Europe’s lead and passed a renewable energy mandate in 2004. Prices jumped even higher after these mandates were strengthened in 2007, 2010, and 2013. This translates into $4.2 billion in higher electricity costs since 2007.
Americans will continue to lose jobs due to environmental regulations, as well as increasing energy prices and higher taxes. Let’s save ourselves some heartache and learn a lesson from Europe.
